Germinated brown rice is one such product with currently only Japan and Taiwan able to grow it. The rice in the bowl radiates with a golden luster. A closer look reveals each grain has a small sprout. This is germinated brown rice. After the unpolished rice has sprouted, it is heat dried, resulting in germinated brown rice. It may sound simple but in fact the process requires a lot of expertise. Plant pathologist Dr Hong Jian-long took the lead in research and joined forces with Chen Li-heng, who brings a wealth of international marketing experience to the deal. Taiwan's germinated brown rice is ready to enter the world stage. As brown rice germinates naturally without the use of chemical stimulants, Chen is hoping it will be a popular choice for health-conscious eaters. The germination process is also said to release nutrients that stimulate brain and nerve activity. Taiwan and Japan are currently the only countries with the technology and experience to cultivate high-tech strains of rice. Producers are hoping competitive marketing of their high-end products will lead the way into the future for Taiwan's agriculture. |
